  • Description

DUE TO THE HEAVY DEMAND FOR FALLOUT SHELTERS LAST YEAR, IN THE WESTERN UNITED STATES, A SWIMMING POOL MANUFACTURER DIVERTED HIS INTERESTS TO SHELTER-MAKING. PRECAST CONCRETE SHELLS ARE TURNED OUT ON THE FACTORY PRODUCTION LINE, READY INSTALLATION IN ANYBODY'S BACK YARD. PRICES RANGE FROM 1,800 TO 2,700 DOLLARS AND INSTALMENT PAYMENTS CAN BE SPREAD OVER FIVE YEARS. INSTALLATION TAKES ABOUT TWO DAYS - A HOLE IS EXCAVATED. THE SHELTER IS LOWERED INTO IT, COVERED IN EARTH AND THE SHELTER IS READY FRO USE - GOOD FOR TWO-WEEKS' PROTECTION AGAINST NUCLEAR FALL-OUT.

TWO NEIGHBORING FAMILIES IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA HAVE INVESTED IN ONE OF THESE "FOX-HOLE" SHELTERS. IN A PRACTICE DRILL BOTH FAMILIES - FOUR ADULTS AND THREE CHILDREN ALTOGETHER - 'WENT TO EARTH' TO TEST THE SHELTER'S FACILITIES. ENTRY IS MADE BY CLIMBING DOWN AN IRON LADDER AND, ONCE EVERYONE IS INSIDE. THE FIRST THING TO DO IS TO SEAL HE DOOR. NEXT THING IS TO CHECK THE BATTERIES IN THE TORCHES - THE ONLY SOURCE OF LIGHT UNDER NUCLEAR ATTACK. THE TWO MEN TAKE IT IN TURNS TO PUMP AIR SUPPLY WHILE THE WOMEN FIND THE CUPBOARDS WELL STOCKED WITH ENOUGH FOOD AND CANNED WATER TO MAINTAIN LIFE. FOR THE SPECIFIED TWO WEEKS. TOILET FACILITIES ARE ADEQUATE, THOUGH THEY COULD HARDLY BE CALLED HOLLYWOOD-STYLE.

1961 WAS BOOM YEAR IN THE SHELTER BUSINESS AND THE MANUFACTURER NOW REPORTS DECLINING SALES EVERYWHERE - EXCEPT IN THE STATES OF KANSAS, WHERE THEY'RE EXPECTING A BAD DAY YEAR FOR CYCLONES.
