  • Description

More than 2,000 families on the outskirts of Nairobi were made homeless as the city authorities cracked down on illegal shanties this week.

The clean-up operation came after the shanty-dwellers had been ordered to pull down their unauthorised buildings within seven days.

Demolition teams arrived early in the morning and began destroying the shanties with iron bars, hammers and axes.

Nairobi City Council was immediately bombarded by protests from local Members of parliament and welfare organisations. They fear that if the council continues with the demolition of unauthorised buildings, as many as 20,000 families could be made homeless.

Most of the shack-dwellers are unemployed. They have come from the four corners of Kenya, attracted by the chance of employment in the capital.
