    Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda met Singapore's leader Lee Kuan Yew on Monday for talks mainly on economic and trade matters between the two countries.

    Mr. Fukuda, who is in the course of a tour of six-non communist Southeast Asian Nations, was greeted at the airport by Prime Minister Lee when he arrived in Singapore on Sunday for a two-day official visit.

    Informed sources said that Mr. Lee was expected at the meeting to ask Mr. Fukuda to give greater access fro Singapore products into the Japanese markets to correct growing trade imbalance in favour of Japan.

    Japan's exports to Singapore last year amounted to 1,532 million US dollars while its imports from the island republic totally only 647 million dollars.

    Both Mr. Fukuda and Mr. Lee called for freer world trade at a dinner party given in honour of visiting Premier.

    Mr. Fukuda said that Singapore and Japan, as seafaring nations with few natural resources, must strive for the maintenance of free trade and freedom of the seas.
