  • Description

CONCORDE 001, FRENCH PROTOTYPE OF THE ANGLO-FRENCH SUPERSONIC AIRLINER, FLEW OVER PARIS FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY (THURSDAY) BEFORE LANDING AT LE BOURGET AIRPORT OUTSIDE THE CITY TO JOIN OTHER AIRCRAFT IN THE 28TH INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW THERE. THE AIR SHOW OFFICIALLY OPENS TOMORROW (FRIDAY), BUT A PRESS REVIEW WAS HELD TODAY TO HIGHLIGHT SOME OF THE MANY EXHIBITS ON DISPLAY FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD.

TRAFFIC HALTED ON THE CHAMPS-ELYSEE IN PARIS TO WATCH THE SLEEK, DROOP-NOSED CONCORDE FLY OVER THE ARC DE TRIOMPHE AT ABOUT 1,500 FEET (500 METRES). ALTHOUGH AIRCRAFT ARE NORMALLY BANNED FROM FLYING OVER PARIS, AN EXCEPTION WAS MADE TO ALLOW THE CONCORDE TO PASS OVER THE CITY AT A SPEED OF ABOUT 370 MILES AN HOUR (600 KM/P/H).

THE CONCORDE, FLOWN BY TEST PILOT ANDRE TURCAT, LATER MADE THREE LOW-LEVEL DEMONSTRATION RUNS FOR NEWSMEN AT LE BOURGET. THE AIRCRAFT HAD FLOWN FROM ITS HOME AIRPORT AT TOULOUSE, IN SOUTH-WEST FRANCE.

THE AMERICAN SPACE EFFORT IS FEATURED AT THE U.S. PAVILION AT LE BOURGET. THE STAR THERE IS THE SCORCHED APOLLO 8 COMMAND MODULE WHICH TOOK THE FIRST AMERICAN ASTRONAUTS AROUND THE MOON IN DECEMBER. THE AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMME IS BEING FURTHER REPRESENTED BY APOLLO 9 ASTRONAUTS JAMES MCDIVITT, RUSSELL SCHWEICKART AND DAVID SCOTT. THE THREE MEN TESTED THE LUNAR MODULE SINCE NICKNAMED "SNOOPY" IN THE APOLLO 10 MISSION -- DURING A 10-DAY MISSION LAST MARCH.

AMERICAN AMBASSADOR TO FRANCE SERGEANT SHRIVER ATTENDED TODAY'S PRESS SHOW.

FRANCE' NEWEST SUPERSONIC FIGHTER-BOMBER, THE MIRAGE F-1, IS ON DISPLAY AT THE SHOW AS IS MARCEL DASSAULT'S SWING-WING FIGHTER, THE MIRAGE G. THE MIRAGE G CAN FLY AT SPEEDS OF MORE THAN TWICE THAT OF SOUND, BUT NEEDS ONLY 1300 FEET (400 METRES) FOR TAKE OFF.

DORNIER OF WEST GERMANY IS EXHIBITING THE WORLD'S FIRST VERTICAL TAKE OFF CARGO AIRCRAFT, THE DO-31. IT HAS TWO LARGE JETS FOR FORWARD PROPULSION, WITH FOUR SMALLER JETS MOUNTED IN EACH NACELLE TO PROVIDE VERTICAL THRUST.

THE BRITISH HARRIER VERTICAL TAKE OFF COMBAT AIRCRAFT IS ALSO ON DISPLAY AT LE BOURGET.

OTHER COUNTRIES SHOWING THEIR AIRCRAFT AND AEROSPACE PRODUCTS INCLUDE SWEDEN, HOLLAND, ITALY, THE SOVIET UNION AND ISRAEL.

THE PARIS AIR SHOW WILL LAST UNTIL JUNE 8 AND WILL FEATURE FLYING DISPLAYS ON THE LAST TWO DAYS.
