SADAT: "In the talks I made two points with the Prime Minister mainly. The first one was the settlement problem and we differ on this. Despite this we had a very extensive exchange of views. I raised also the question of Southern Lebanon. Our position, as the Prime Minister knew, that we are for the full integrity of Lebanon. We shall never agree on any partition or anything that may cause any disintegration."

BEGIN: We do not want to see any disintegration of the state of Lebanon. As I said President Sadat and I agree completely that the integrity of Lebanon should be preserved. The second point from our point of view is that we are permanently attacked by the so-called P.L.O. whose headquarters are in Beirut. Therefore anything we have done until now or what we shall have to do in the future is to defend our people. It is an act of absolutely legitimate national self defence. We had an exchange of views about the negotiations to provide the Palestinian arabs with full autonomy and I characterised this part of the conversation perhaps as the most important."

Background: President Anwar Sadat of Egypt has acknowledged that he failed to persuade Israel's Prime Minister Begin to call off Jewish settlement of occupied Arab Lands. Mr Sadat said at a news conference following two days of talks with Mr Begin that they continue to disagree on the issue. But both men indicated that there had been progress on the question of self-rule for Palestinians on the West Bank of the Jordan and on the Gaza Strip. Mr Sadat has agreed to make a return visit to Israel at the end of August. Both leaders were in full agreement that Lebanon's integrity should not be threatened.
