ETRUSCAN TOMBS -- HISTORIC MONUMENTS DATING FROM THE NINTH CENTURY B.C. -- ARE BEING REGULARLY?

  • Description

ETRUSCAN TOMBS -- HISTORIC MONUMENTS DATING FROM THE NINTH CENTURY B.C. -- ARE BEING REGULARLY PIRATED BY PROFITEERS IN THE COUNTRYSIDE ROUND THE ANCIENT ITALIAN TOWN OF TARQUINIA. "INSTANT ARCHAEOLOGISTS" HAVE BEEN MAKING CLANDESTINE RAIDS ON THE TOMBS AND SELLING THEIR TAKINGS ON THE INTERNATIONAL ART BLACK MARKET. A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN ACCOMPANIED A GROUP OF THE "PIRATES" TO OBTAIN EXCLUSIVE FILM OF THEIR OPERATIONS.

TARQUINIA, KNOWN AS TARCHUNA OR TARCHNA IN ETRUSCAN TIMES, IS ABOUT 55 MILES (90 KMS) FROM ROME, AND IS ONE OF THE ACKNOWLEDGED STOREHOUSES OF UNDISCOVERED ITALIAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURE.

IT'S ESTIMATED THAT THERE ARE SOME 2,500 ETRUSCAN TOMBS IN THE AREA, BUT THE ITALIAN DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS HAS BEEN ABLE TO RECORD ONLY 698. THE REST ARE EASY PREY FOR THE MEN WHO MAKE THEIR LIVING SELLING THE ETRUSCAN REMAINS TO ART CONNOISSEURS AND TOURISTS.

PRIMARILY, THE PIRATES ARE IN SEARCH OF JEWELLERY -- LIKE THE MEMBERS OF MANY EARLY CIVILISATIONS, THE ETRUSCANS BELIEVED IN INTERRING A MAN'S POSSESSIONS WITH HIS BONES. BUT EVEN POTTERY AND PIECES OF THE FUNERAL SARCOPHAGUS HAVE A HIGH RE-SALE VALUE.

THE PIRATES GENERALLY CONDUCT THEIR INITIAL INVESTIGATIONS BY DAYLIGHT. IN MANY CASES THEY PROBE THE GROUND WITH LONG SPIKES, BUT OFTEN FIND FREER ACCESS THROUGH CAVES. THE CAVES, LIT BY CANDLELIGHT, ARE USUALLY PLUNDERED BY NIGHT.

THE INCREASE IN CLANDESTINE OPERATIONS IS CAUSING CONCERN TO THE AUTHORITIES, BUT THERE IS LITTLE MEANS OF POLICING THE TOMBS. THE PIRATES WORK FAST AND EFFICIENTLY, AND LEAVE VIRTUALLY NO TRACE OF THEIR VISIT.
