Background: SOUTH KOREAN TROOPS MOVED INTO THE VILLAGE OF TUY HOA, ABOUT 250 MILES (300 METERS) NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON LAST WEEK. THEY WENT THERE AFTER FARMERS IN THE DISTRICT HAD APPEALED FOR PROTECTION AGAINST VIETCONG THEFT OF THEIR CROPS WHICH DUE FOR HARVESTING.

TUY HOA IS A COASTAL VILLAGE WHICH USUALLY REAPS A VERY RICH RICE HARVEST. IT IS CONSIDERED BY MILITARY OFFICIALS TO BE A VIETCONG STRONGHOLD. FARMERS THERE SAY THAT IN PREVIOUS SEASONS THEY HAVE HAD TO GIVE AS MUCH AS A THIRD OF THEIR CROP TO THE VIETCONG - AND THEY WERE DETERMINED THAT THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.

AS THE HARVEST WAS BROUGHT IN SOUTH KOREAN MARINES STOOD-BY-THEIR RIFLES AT THE READY. CLOSE TO THEM THE FARMERS REAPED THE RICE CROP WITH THE HELP OF BULLS, WATER-BUFFALOES AND PONIES.

IT TOOK A LITTLE UNDER FIVE HOURS TO COLLECT THE RICE - AND THEN THE FARMERS RECEIVED A MILITARY ESCORT AS THEY DROVE THE CROP TO NEARBY RICE MILLS.

DURING AND SHORTLY AFTER THE OPERATION, THE SOUTH KOREANS DETAINED A NUMBER OF PEOPLE SUSPECTED OF BEING VIETCONG.
