SYNOPSIS: British Ambassador Geoffrey Jackson, newly freed after 246 days as a captive of Uruguay's Tupamaros guerrillas, arrived home in London on Saturday to a warm top-level welcome. (PAUSE)
As the jet touched down, it was announced that Queen Elizabeth had appointed the envoy a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George which means he is now known as Sir Geoffrey. The award is traditionally made to British diplomats for distinguished service.

The 56-year-old Ambassador looked pale but in obvious good spirits as he faced a throng of reporters and cameramen. Although he had shaved off the beard he wore in captivity, his hair was longer than the customary diplomatic length. "I look like the original shaggy dog," he said. "I must go away and get my hair cut."
