  • Description

Maltese side Sliema Wanderers produced a creditable performance to go down only 1-2 to top flight Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in their European Football Union (UEFA) Cup match in Malta's Gzira stadium on Wednesday (24 September).

The game was the first leg of their first round match. Sliema who must now play the second leg in Lisbon a goal down, has little chance of reaching the second round - but the score was a large improvement on the last time Sporting Lisbon visited Malta. That was five years ago when they beat Floriana 4-0 in the European Cup. Wednesday's scoreline backs up the fact that Sliema is Malta's best side.

There are six full internationals in the Sporting side but the young Sliema forwards ran hard before their small 5,000 crowd. Sporting's Marinho scored a goal from an acute angle which should have been cut out so at the interval Sliema were one down with little gained from their efforts.

In the second half Azzopardi equalised with a grand goal for the Maltese side - rounding off a good dribble with an even better shot. But just when it seemed Sliema was certain of a draw with which Malta could have been proud, Fernandez' excellent overhead kick made it 2-1 to Sporting with seconds to go.
