  • Description

One of the most pressing needs of the troubled Congo Republic 1 schools and teachers to man them. At the time of independence there were less than twelve Congolese in the country with University education. Throughout the conflict that has swept the state since independence the Anthene Royal school in Leopoldville has continued the work of educating Congolese and European children.

Here 1,150 children - 58 of them Europeans - study under 40 Belgian teachers and four Congolese students. Included in the subjects the children are instructed in handcrafts. They are also given a basic course in trades and cooking.

The school-leaving age is about 18-years when the students can go on to University. During the fighting and conflict that has taken place in Leopoldville most of the children turned out for classes although at times there were not enough teachers to deal with them.
