MAMO WOLDE OF ETHIOPIA LEFT THE FIELD SO FAR BEHIND WHEN HE WON THE GOLD MEDAL IN THE OLYMPIC MARATHON RACE THAT HE HAD COMPLETED A LAP OF HONOUR AND LEFT THE STADIUM BEFORE THE NEXT RUNNER APPEARED.

35-YEAR-OLD WOLDE'S TIME WAS TWO HOURS 20 MINUTES 26.4 SECONDS. 11 MINUTES OUTSIDE AUSTRALIAN DEREK CLAYTON'S WORLD RECORD TIME. IN THE EARLY STAGES OF THE RACE THE LEAD CHANGED SEVERAL TIMES, BUT WOLDE WAS ALWAYS UP WITH THE LEADERS AND HAD TAKEN OVER BY THE 20 KM. (12 MILES) MARK. HE SAID THAT HIS TACTICS WERE TO SAVE HIS STRENGTH FOR THE FIRST 11 MILES (17 KMS.) AND THEN MAKE HIS RUN FOR VICTORY AS HIS RIVALS WERE BEGINNING TO TIRE. WOLDE HAD ALREADY WON A SILVER MEDAL FOR THE 10,000 METRES.

THERE WERE SEVENTY-TWO RUNNERS; 57 OF THEM COMPLETED THE COURSE. THE MOST GRUELLING RACE IN THE OLYMPICS, THE 26-MILE (42 KMS.) MARATHON WAS RUN UNDER A BLAZING SUN. THE ROUTE LED FROM THE PLAZA DE LA CONSTITUTION IN THE HEART OF MEXICO CITY THROUGH A WINDING WAY THROUGH THE SUBURBS TO END IN THE MAIN STADIUM.
