  • Description

About 500 Puerto Ricans, angry at the U.S. Navy using small Culebra Island in the Caribbean for bombing and gunnery practice, staged a protest on Saturday (July 25) in the middle of the planned impact area.

The Navy owns about a third of the island and uses this section for aircraft and warship target practice. Now the Navy wants to use more but the 726 people on Culebra - which is about 55 miles (90 kms) from San Juan, Puerto Rico, say they have had enough bombing and shelling.

On Saturday they went to the target area, pulled down the freshly-painted warning signs and set up camp.

For three days and nights the only fire on the island was from the protesters' camp-fire, the Navy having cancelled several gunnery exercises.

The U.S. Defence Department announced recently that firing would continue on the island in the interest of national security.

The protesters have countered by saying that they will move people into the target area to stay.
