  • Description

A mammoth five-hour parade through Kinshasa on Tuesday (24 November) marked the end of five days of celebrations of the Fifth Anniversary of the Congo's Third Republic.

President Joseph Mobutu attended several Anniversary occasions, including the parade itself, the demonstration by Air Congo of the model of its new terminal building, and the inauguration of the 'Marie Antoinette' a floating hospital which will spread medical facilities for the first time to a large part of the country.

Air Congo's new building is an impressive structure of thirty-seven floors, built on the grand scale to express the spirit of the new Congo.

President Mobutu studied the model of the new building with interest and listened to explanations of how it would be used by the airline.

The President also inspected a new hospital ship, which will give the first medical services of this kind in a developing country.

The President cut the tape in the official launching ceremony of the ship, named "Marie Antoinette" after his wife. It is 210 feet ( 64 metres ) long, has four decks, and includes full operating and treatment facilities.

The ship will be in radio contact with the capital, and a helicopter will fly in supplies and evacuate patients. Much of its work will be in public health and curative medicine.

The ship will travel along the river Congo and its tributaries, which spread throughout most of the country's eight provinces.

Thousands of Congolese took part in the climax of the Anniversary celebration, the five-hour parade through the capital.

Flanked by Generals, President Mobutu took the salute at the parade, after a review of the armed forces.

Heading the march-past was the new Presidential cavalry escort, with mounted bugles and drums, followed by army motorised units, the Gendarmerie, artillery and armoured units. Overhead the Congolese air force flew in varying formations as the army exhibited its communications vehicles, road and bridge building equipment, and anti-aircraft batteries.

Forty-year-old President Mobutu was elected to a further seven-year term earlier this month.
