  • Description

Youth of the right-wing scout-organization "Betar", affiliated to the largest opposition party "Herut", have tried in the past to ascertain Israel's presence on the Temple Mount, the site of king Solomon's destroyed temple, and today the location of the sanctuaries of Islam, the Dome of the Rock and the Aqsa Mosque. As in the past, Israel police defended today the sanctity of the Islamic shrines by preventing first single members of the Gahal party and later an organized group of Betar scouts from entering the Temple Mount. Carrying placards, accusing amongst others the Vatican for being concerned for the sanctity of Jerusalem today whilst silent at the time of the slaughter of 6 million Jews, the Youth also attacked the Israeli Govt. for guarding the shrines of Islam and offering king Hussein autonomy over the holy places of Islam whilst preventing Jews to pray on the Mount. Since this demo took place on the anniversary of the uprising of the Jews in the warsaw ghetto the group was addressed by a Herut journalist who spoke about the heroism of the Jews at that time and told the youth that the police was doing only its duty and that it was not the policeman fault that they could get onto the Mount. Nevertheless there was arguments and at one time the youth tried to push into the closed gate leading to the Mount. But then the assembly listened to a prayer and the shofar horn was blown as the youth started to sing "Hatiqa", the National Anthem and "Jerusalem the Golden" before, upon the urging of their elders, they descended towards the Wailing Wall. Once again Israel proved that it is quite capable to safeguard the sanctity of holy places of other religions.
