  • Description

INTRODUCTION: President William Gopallawa of Sri Lanka has taken time off from his country's political difficulties to pay an official visit to a neighbouring Moslem nation, Bangladesh. He arrived there on Thursday (17 March) to a welcome by the Bangladesh President, Abusadat Mohammed Rahman.

SYNOPSIS: President Abusadat, who took power after an internal dispute resulting in the eventual overthrow of Bangladesh's first President, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was accompanied at the airport welcome by his deputy, Major-General Ziaur Rahman. President Gopallawa dissolved Sri Lanka's parliament last month on the advice of his Prime Minister, Mrs Sirimavo Bandanaraike, and general elections are to be held there in May. Shortly after the dissolution, parliament was suspended.

The moves follow political party difficulties, and now Mrs. Bandanaraike's Centre Freedom Party is expected to go to the polls alone after the break-up of its ruling alliance with the two major Communist parties.
