  • Description

Three 'Skymaster' aircraft, each carrying eight tons of maise, took off from Salisbury airport, Southern Rhodesia, Jan 17, bound for Luluabourg, capital of the Congo's Kasai Province.

For the past few days these aircraft have been providing a shuttle service, ferrying the much needed grain into the famine stricken Province, where 200 people are dying of hunger every day. In all they will carry 100-tons of grain bought by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation from Southern Rhodesia's Grain Marketing Board.

The F.A.O. has undertaken the work of emergency famine relief of the 300,000 starving refugees in South Kasai. A senior official of the Organisation said "suitable seed must be available at airports in the neighbouring African countries at a minimum rate of 50-tons each day. Seeds for the coming crop season must be planted before the end of the first week in February if food is to be harvested later this year."
Since film and newspaper reports of the refugees plight have been published, world sympathy has been roused. Food, clothing, and money for relief have been pouring into international Red Cross organisations.
