    Ghana Armed Forces took the lead in the first ghana v. Uganda Armed Forces Sports Festival at the El-Wak stadium in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday (3 April).

    Their athletes won three gold, two silver and two bronze medals in the opening day's four events. The festival includes hockey, basketball, volleyball, football and boxing as well as athletics. Most of Ghans and Uganda's sportsmen come from the armed forces so the standard is high and the games have attracted a lot of attention.

    Pte. Peter Mensah of Ghane won the first event - the 400 metres-with a powerful run. J. Chekwoti of Uganda was second, Ghana's Pte. J. Boateng third.

    The Ghanaians also collected the gold in the long jump and shot putt with a 7.09 metre (25 ft. 11in.) jump by A/C J. Doodoo and 13.9 metre (45 ft. 7in.) throw by Sgt. Dable respeotively. But Uganda came first and second in the 5,000 metres which S. Maket won in 15mins. 23seconds.

    SYNOPSIS: Mensah was ahead at the final bend and he held on to complete a powerful run. His final time of forty-four point nine seconds was five seconds outside the world record but it left him clear of Uganda's J. Chekwoti. Ghana also took the bronze through Private J. boateng.

    Ghana's Private Torsu collected the silver medal. Lance Corporal Oguang of Uganda was third.

    Ghana's third gold of the day was in the long jump. the bronze medalist Private Silvester of Uganda jumped about the same distance as the top Ghanaians but the spoilt some jumps by falling backwards.

    Aide de Camp J. Doodoo of Ghana jumped almost twenty-six feet to win. Ghana's Lieutenant S. Dodornu was second in the five thousand metres.
