  • Description

Demonstrators marched through the streets of Palermo, the capital of Sicily, today (Friday) as a general strike paralysed much of the economically backward island. The strike was called by Italy's three big trade union federations who are demanding the creation of 400,000 more jobs to cut unemployment.

After their march through city, the demonstrators, many with placards and red flags, assembled before Palermo's Regional Assembly Building.

The 24-hour stoppage closed newspapers, halted public transport and shut factories in many parts of the island. But in Palermo itself, buses operated as usual and several factories remained open. No serious incidents were reported.

In Rome, President Giuseppe Saragat continued political soundings in an effort to solve the country's government crisis. Political sources said that it seemed increasing likely that caretaker Prime Minister Signor Mariano Rumor would be asked to try and form a new government early next week.
