  • Description

At the vast International Trade Fair in Chicago part of a specially woven crimson carpet is laid for the visit of the Queen.

The carpet - half a mile long - is provided by one of the city's leading discount houses now selling smaller copies of the carpet under the slogan: Every American woman can have a rug fit for a Queen.

During her 13-hour visit in Chicago the Queen will ride over the carpet in an orange and grey freight tractor bearing the name of the manufacturer - for prestige publicity.

At the waterfront rehearsing for the visit is a motor launch with electric horns tuned to play God Save The Queen (SOF). The Queen will step ashore here from the royal motor yacht Britannia anchored on Lake Michigan to begin the visit the first by a reigning monarch.

Chicago is the only U.S. city the Queen is visiting on the 44-day tour of Canada. A former mayor once threatened to "punch King George in the snoot" (nose) if he ever went to Chicago. Elizabeth is his granddaughter. Her welcome July 6 includes a motorcade procession through the city and a dinner by Mayor Richard Daley with 1000 guests.
