  • Description

FOR SPANISH FISHERMAN JACINTO JUAN BAEZA THE MEDITERRANEAN IS HIS HOME -- LITERALLY. HE HAS LIVED IN A LEAKY ROWING BOAT ON ITS BLUE WATERS FOR NEARLY 20 YEARS. IT IS WHERE HE WORKS, EATS AND SLEEPS.

HE COMES ASHORE ABOUT ONCE EVERY TWO MONTHS, BUT THEN FOR NO MORE THAN 30 MINUTES. IF HE STAYS LONGER, HE BECOMES VIOLENTLY LANDSICK AND RETURNS TO THE BOBBING ATMOSPHERE HE HAS BECOME SO USED TO.

IN 1944, WHEN JACINTO WAS 30, HE CAUGHT HIS LEG IN THE WINDING MECHANISM OF AN ANCHOR. IT WAS AMPUTATED, AND WHILE HE LAY IN HOSPITAL HE SWORE TO THE PATRON SAINT OF FISHERMEN THAT HE WOULD SPEND 20 YEARS ON THE SEA.

SINCE THEN, HE HAS LED A LONELY EXISTENCE IN HIS BOAT, FISHING FOR SHRIMPS TO SELL TO OTHER FISHERMEN AND TOURISTS IN ALICANTE, THE RESORT IN EASTERN SPAIN.

SO LONG HAS HIS SELF-EXILE BECOME THAT HE CAN NO LONGER REMEMBER WHAT ALICANTE, HIS HOME TOWN, LOOKS LIKE, APART FROM ITS WATERFRONT.

BUT ON DECEMBER 15, IT WILL ALL COME BACK TO HIM. FOR THAT IS THE DAY WHEN HIS 20 YEARS ARE UP AND HE RETURNS TO LAND FOR GOOD -- PROVIDING HE CAN GET USED TO A SOFT MATRESS RATHER THAN A ROUGH TARPAULIN FOR A BED.
