    Background: NIGERIA

The 20-month-old government of Major General Mohammed Buhari has been ousted by an apparently bloodless coup (27/8), according to a statement broadcast on Lagos radio. Brigadier Joshua Dogoniaro said in the broadcast that the Buhari administration had not fulfilled Nigeria's hopes, adding that power had been concentrated in hands of a 'select few' within the ruling military council who abused their authority and regarded anyone who offered advise as disloyal. A dusk to dawn curfew is reported to have been imposed in the capital Lagos and the country's border and ports have been closed. Communications with the outside world have also been cut. Reports from Lagos say that Army Chief of Staff Major General Babangida has been invited to become President and Commander in Chief. Buhari himself seized power in a coup staged on the last day of 1983, returning Nigeria to military rule after four and a half years of civilian government. Buhari then pledged to ruthlessly stamp out corruption and build a new Nigeria.
