Background: FIREWORKS BLAZING ACROSS THE MIDNIGHT SKY, THE LOWERING OF THE UNION JACK TO BE REPLACED BY THE GAMBIA'S NEW FLAG, AND THE FORMAL HANDING-OVER OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL INSTRUMENTS - THESE WERE THE MANIFESTATIONS OF BRITAIN'S LAST WEST AFRICAN COLONY'S MOVE TO INDEPENDENCE.

THE DUKE OF KENT, ACCOMPANIED BY THE DUCHESS, DROVE TO MACCARTHY SQUARE IN CENTRAL BATHURST FOR THE MIDNIGHT FLAG-RAISING CEREMONY ON WEDNESDAY. REPRESENTATIVES FROM 30 COUNTRIES WATCHED THE PRIME MINISTER, MR DAVID JAWARA, WELCOME THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES.

THE GAMBIA POLICE FIELD FORCE MARCHED ON TO THE PARADE TO MUSIC PLAYED BY THE ROYAL MARINES BAND FROM H.M.S.LION. AT MIDNIGHT, THE UNION JACK WAS SALUTED AND HAULED DOWN FOR THE LAST TIME. IN ITS PLACE ROSE THE NEW FLAG OF THE GAMBIA. THE EXCITED CITIZENS OF THE FORMER COLONY CLAPPED ENTHUSIASTICALLY AS FIREWORKS ARCHED ACROSS THE SKY SIGNALLING THE DAWN OF INDEPENDENCE.

ON THURSDAY, REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE RED CROSS, SCOUTS AND GUIDES AND OTHER VOLUNTARY BODIES GATHERED AGAIN IN THE SQUARE. THE PRIME MINISTER AND HIS WIFE WELCOMED THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL WHO ARRIVED SHORTLY AFTERWARDS. AFTER INSPECTING A GUARD OF HONOUR HE WAS SWORN IN BY THE CHIEF JUSTICE, SIGNED THE OATH AND SPOKE TO THE ASSEMBLED CITIZENS OF BATHURST AND THEIR DISTINGUISHED GUESTS.

THEN THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF KENT DROVE UP TO BE MET BY PRIME MINISTER AND GOVERNOR-GENERAL. HE DELIVERED A SPEECH IN WHICH HE RELAYED THE GOOD WISHES OF QUEEN ELIZABETH FOR THE GAMBIA'S FUTURE. HE THEN HANDED OVER THE CONSTITUTIONAL INSTRUMENTS EMBODYING THE GAMBIA'S INDEPENDENCE CONSTITUTION. PRIME MINISTER JAWARA WAVED THE DOCUMENTS ABOVE HIS HEAD AS THE CROWD APPLAUDED.
