  • Description

The Ivory Coast's highly mobile vaccination programme received a boost last week with a gift of another nine vehicles from the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

At a ceremony on Thursday (March 30), the Fund's Regional Representative at Abidjan, M. Maurice Diwouta, handed over the vehicles to Ivorian Director-General of Health Dr. Felix Sorie.

SYNOPSIS: At the Public Health Ministry in Abidjan, a new fleet of nine vehicles was handed over last week to aid the ivory Coast's mobile vaccination programme. The vehicles -- all lightweight and able to operate over difficult terrain -- are the gift of the United Nation's International Children's Emergency Fund.

    M. Maurice Diwouta, the Fund's Regional Representative, officially presented the vehicles to the Ivorian Director-General of Health, Dr. Felix Serie, last Thursday. In the space of a year, said M. Diwouta, the Fund had presented the authorities with a fleet of thirty vehicles.

Dr. Serie, expressing the ministry's gratitude, said the new vehicles will aid the Social Medicine Service. Prior to inspecting the vehicles, Dr. Serie declared that the service was still in need of transport as well as medicines. The Present gift, part of a major aid programme since 1960, will help fill a pressing need. Total cost of the vehicles is estimated at over ten million CFA francs. After receiving the keys from M. Diwouta, Dr. Serie got a driver's eye view of one of the new trucks.

Some of the vehicles were pressed into service shortly after the handover ceremony. They'll be primarily used in the programme for vaccinating the population of outlying rural areas.
