Background: Teheran, Persia, Aug 16, an election rally was held in the northern end of the city, in preparation for the following day's election.
Placard-carrying students of the National Front - followers of ex-Premier Mossadegh - demanded nationwide cancellation of the elections, and polling under auspices of a new government. Police watched the proceedings which went off quietly - setting the tone for next day's polling.
Long queues waited outside Teheran's 71 polling booths, and voting was quiet, although it was reported that in Miandooab, Azerbaijan Province, troops fired on Opposition supporters who tried to storm a polling booth.
By Aug 18 it was clear that Premier Eg???balls Mellyoun (Nationalist) Party would retain power; it had won 102 Parliament seats to the Opposition Party's 46 and the Independents' 3; 49 results were still to be announced.
