In September, the Argentinian army command was split by an argument over treatment of he country's guerrillas. Two top generals, Major General Luciano Menendez and Brigadier General Jorge Maradona, were sacked for demanding a crackdown on left-wing guerrilla groups.

It was General Roberto Viola, the army's commander, who announced the two men's expulsion.

Also attending the All Souls' Day service were the country's airforce commander Brigadier General Omar Graffigna and naval chief Admiral Armando Lambruschini.

Recently a civilian league for protection against guerrillas was set up in Argentina following a bomb attack on a top government aide and his family in September. At the same time, a commission of investigation from the Organisation of American states was preparing a report on the government's own human rights record in the treatment of prisoners arrested during its struggle against the guerrillas. Some five thousand people are reported to have disappeared after being arrested by security forces.
