    Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam arrived in Belgium's capital, Brussels, on Sunday (15 December) at the start of a five-week European tour, He was accompanied by his wife Margaret. His visit to Belgium is scheduled for four days.

    On Monday (16 December) Mr. Whitlam laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown warrior and met King Baudouin and queen Fabiola.

    This is the first time tat an Australiam Prime Minister has started a European tour elsewhere than London and demonstrates Australia's loosening of traditional ties with Britain.

    Australian officials commented that this visit reflects Australia's changing relations with Britain and Europe. They use trade statistics to underline the change: in 1958/59 Britain's share of Australian exports was 32 per cent -- Britian now takes less than nine per cent.

    On British membership of the European Economic Community (EEC), Australian officials said Australia has no strong feelings as to whether Britain remained in the EEC or not.

    Mr. Whitlam is due to leave for Britain, on the second leg of his ten-nation tour, on Thursday (19 December).
