Background: International Women's Day on Saturday (8 March) was celebrated throughout the world by rallies in support of women's rights.
In New York, hundreds of men, women and children marched through the United States city campaigning for a wide range of Social reforms.
Carrying banners in support of such causes as the elimination of racism, sexism and discrimination against homosexuals, and representing such groups as the Women's Strike for Peace and the Irish Women's Movement, they streamed down the famous Fifth Avenue.
Later they gathered in union Square to hear leading Women's Liberationists and Congresswomen proclaim the feminine ideals on this central day in International Women's Year.
