  • Description

Japan's first full-scale open zoo for children has been opened at ueno Park in Tokyo.

Hundreds of four and five-year-old children attended the opening on Monday (20 March) which coincided with the 90th anniversary of the founding of Ueno Zoo.

In the new children's zoo, youngsters will be able to fondle and feed domestic animals such as goats, sheep, turkeys and geese -- and they'll be able to watch more exotic wildlife such as chimpanzees and penguins at close quarters.

Zoo attendants will be on hand at all times, and they hope the new park will give them an opportunity to instruct children in the care of animals.

SYNOPSIS: A great day for the children of Tokyo. Complete with band they made their way to Ueno Park on Monday for the opening of a new children's zoo -- the first of its kind in Japan.

A gift for the zoo -- then the business of formally declaring the new park open. On hand to help -- Ueno Zoo's popular female chimpanzee, "Beret".

The opening of the children's park coincided with the 90th anniversary of the founding of Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. The new park is seen as a bold experiment to bring animals and children together -- and to teach children to love and care for their pets. Many of the creatures are domestic animals -- and roam freely through the park. But the more exotic penguins are to look at rather than fondle.

Judging by the opening day it's the goats which are likely to appeal most.

Monkeys have a habit of joining the various activities in the park. Some, it seems, have positions of responsibility.

Children with a leaning towards equestrian skills can take their first lessons on the zoo ponies.

In their efforts to make children feel compassion for wildlife, zoo officials encourage them to feed and play with the free-roaming animals. For some the wonders of the natural world are just a little too much to take.
