INTRODUCTION: An era in Indian politics ended on Tuesday (22 March) when Mrs Indira Gandhi resigned as Prime Minister. Mrs Gandhi and her father Pandit Nehru have dominated Indian politics since independence in 194%. The Congress Party which she headed has lost power for the first time since then.
SYNOPSIS: At the headquarters of the Janata Party in New Delhi, senior party members have been meeting to form the new government. The party and its main ally, the Congress for Democracy Party decisively defeat the Congress Party in the recent general election, and have a majority of more than 100 seats over the former government. The man most likely to take over as Prime Minister is Mr Morarji Desai, aged 81, a former Deputy Prime Minister and leader of Janata. His main opponent is former Agriculture Minister and leader of Congress for Democracy, Mr Jagjivan Ram. The new government is expected to take office in a few days.
After handing her resignation to acting President B.D. Jatti, Mrs Gandhi made a statement to the people of India about the election which ended her 11 years in power.
