  • Description

PRESIDENT MAKARIOS TOOK THE SALUTE TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AS 5,000 GREEK-CYPRIOTS, INCLUDING SECURITY FORCES WITH MACHINE GUNS AND BAZOOKAS, MARCHED PAST IN THE ANNUAL 'EOKA' DAY PARADE IN NICOSIA. THE EVENT DREW THE BIGGEST CROWDS TO BE SEEN IN THE CYPRUS CAPITAL SINCE THE ARCHBISHOP RETURNED FROM BRITISH-IMPOSED EXILE BEFORE THE ISLAND ATTAINED INDEPENDENCE.

THE EVENT MARKS THE NINTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FORMATION OF THE UNDERGROUND ARMY WHICH FOUGHT FOR INDEPENDENCE FROM THE BRITISH. FIFTY PLATOONS OF SECURITY FORCES DRESSED IN BLUE UNIFORMS AND KHAKI BATTLEDRESS MARCHED IN THE PARADE, ALL HEAVILY ARMED WITH RIFLES, BREN-GUNS, CZECH MADE SPANDAU MACHINE GUNS AND BAZOOKAS. THEY WERE FOLLOWED BY JEEPS WITH MACHINE GUNS AND MORTARS.

(THE CYPRUS MINISTER OF THE INTERIOR, MR GEORGHADJIS, HIMSELF A FORMER EOKA CHIEF, ACCOMPANIED THE PRESIDENT ON THE SALUTING DAIS SET UP AT THE EDGE OF THE MOAT THAT SURROUNDS THE ANCIENT WALLS OF THE OLD CITY. ANOTHER PROMINENT EOKA LEADER, NEWSPAPER OWNER NICOS SAMPSON TOOK PART IN THE MARCH PAST ITSELF. BEFORE ATTENDING THE PARADE, PRESIDENT MAKARIOS WENT TO A SPECIAL TE DEUM MASS, AT THE GREEK ORTHODOX PHANEROMENI CHURCH INSIDE THE OLD CITY.)
