  • Description

While Socialists throughout Portugal are celebrating their success in Friday's General Election, the Popular Democrats are hinting of a coalition with them.

The Socialists polled 38 per cent of the vote and the Democrats 26 per cent in the election for 247 members of the Constituent Assembly.

The two Parties have been the strongest promoters of the ideals of parliamentary democracy, rather than the revolutionary course Portugal has taken since the abortive right-wing coup last month.

A member of the leftist Military Revolutionary Council--which at present holds supreme power in the country--Lieutenant Ramiro Corroia, said however, the result did not mean the armed forces had changed their policy. He repeated that the Portuguese people were not politically educated enough to vote after half a century of dictatorship.
