Background: INTRODUCTION: The English Football League Cup Final was played at Wembley, London on Saturday (12 March) between Aston Villa and Everton. It ended in a goalless draw.
SYNOPSIS: Before the match, there'd been a week of promises that this season's final would be the best ever seen at Wembley. Aston Villa were the favourites and did look as though they wanted to win but in the first 20 minutes they made so many mistakes that Everton-spurred on by Martin Dobson and Duncan McKenzie-had several chances.
One hundred thousand people had assembled at Wembley for the match. Everton miss another chance. Neither team had any luck. It was a sad let down.
It's the first time there's been a goal-less draw in the 16 year-old competition. Now the two teams will have to play off in Sheffield next Wednesday night (16 March). It also means a hectic cup schedule. For both teams will be involved in the quarter finals of the English Football Association Cup three days later.
Some commentators called it the biggest bore of the season. The only players to emerge with any credit were Aston Villa defender John Gidman and striker Brian little.
