  • Description

TENSION MOUNTED IN NORTHERN IRELAND YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) AS A BOMB HIT AN ARMY BUILDING IN BELFAST, AND DEMONSTRATORS THREW STONES AT SOLDIERS WHO TRIED TO DISPERSE THEIR MEETING IN LONDONDERRY.

IN BELFAST, A BOMB HURLED FROM A SPEEDING CAR BLASTED A GAPING HOLE IN A BUILDING IN SHANKILL ROAD WHERE 50 BRITISH TROOPS WERE RESTING. NO-ONE WAS HURT, BUT THE EXPLOSION SHATTERED THE PEACE OF A QUIET WEEKEND AFTER A WEEK OF FEARS THAT NORTHERN IRELAND'S UNEASY TRUCE BETWEEN CATHOLICS AND PROTESTANT WAS COMING TO AN END.

IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE EXPLOSION, CROWDS OF PROTESTANT EXTREMISTS STARTED MASSING ON THE SHANKILL ROAD AREA, AND EXTRA SOLDIERS WERE POSTED AROUND A BLOCK OF FLATS IN THE AREA OCCUPIED BY CATHOLICS.

YESTERDAY WAS THE SECOND NIGHT OF A DRINKS CURFEW IN BELFAST. PUBS, HOTELS AND RESTAURANTS WERE BANNED FROM SELLING LIQUOR AFTER 8.30 P.M.

MEANWHILE, LONDONDERRY STOOD ON THE BRINK OF ANOTHER MAJOR UPHEAVAL AS UP TO 3,000 DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED IN GUILDHALL SQUARE FOR A PEOPLE'S DEMOCRACY MEETING. THEY WERE GIVEN A FIERY ADDRESS BY THEIR CHAIRMAN, MR MICHAEL FERRALL.

THE PEOPLE'S DEMOCRACY GATHERING WAS HELD IN DEFIANCE OF THE BAN ON PUBLIC MEETINGS, RENEWED RECENTLY BY THE HOME AFFAIRS MINISTERS, MR PORTER. EXTRA TROOPS WERE ON STANDBY IN CASE OF ANY TROUBLE.

TROUBLE FLARED BRIEFLY YESTERDAY ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE BOGSIDE AREA OF LONDONDERRY, WHEN TWO ARRESTS WERE MADE FOLLOWING AN INCIDENT AT WATERLOO PLACE.

STONES AND BOTTLES WERE THROWN AT TROOPS MANNING THE BARRICADES, AND AN ARMY SPOKESMAN CONFIRMED THAT TWO PEOPLE HAD BEEN HANDED OVER TO THE POLICE.

AFTER THE ARREST ABOUT 80 PEOPLE GATHERED AT THE WATERLOO PLACE BARRICADE BUT WERE PACIFIED BY TROOPS AND POLICE.
