Background: The Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri inspected a 200 strong inter-service Guard of Honour, unfurled the National Flag on the ramparts of the Red Fort and addressed the gathering to celebrate the 18th anniversary of the country's independence today August 15, 1965.
A colourful array of buglers, dressed in their full regalia, heralded the ceremonies with a bugle call from the mineretts of the Red Fort.
The Prime Minister, as he drove to Red Fort, his car was escorted by ten motor cyclists-- one from the civil police and three each from Army, Navy and air force. He was received by the Defence Minister Mr.Chavan, the Mayor of Delhi Mr.Nurudin Ahmed and the GOC Delhi and Rajasthan Area Maj.Genl.D.G.R.Rajwade.The GOC then conducted Shashtri to the dais and guard of honour gave a general salute. After inspecting the guard of honour, the Prime Minister unfurled the national flag and addressed the gathering.
A huge gathering reminiscence of Nehru days was present to listen to Shashtri.Perhaps current Pakistan infiltration and the Kutch agreement made people eager listen to Shashtri and Shashtri did not appoint them.
Leaving aside his modest nature, he forthrightly accused China and Pakistan of aggression against India.Talking about the Kashmir infiltration, Shashtri laughed at the "Dreams" of Pakistan to annex Kashmir and warned Pakistan that not an inch of territory will be given to Pakistan. What is more the time has now come when we will answer "Weapon with a weapon" and give a stone for a stone".
