    The Dutch-built passenger vessel, "Akosombo Queen", has made its first voyage on Lake Volta in Ghana.

    The ship weighs 55 tons and will ply from Akosombo to Yapei - a distance of 250 miles (400 kms). Each trip will take about 20 hours.

    The "Akosombo Queen" has been donated to Ghana by the Dutch Government. At a ceremony on the wharf at Akosombo on Tuesday (1 August) the Dutch Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. C.B. Arriens, referred to the interest shown by Dutch nationals in the development of Ghana generally - and the Volta River Project in particular.

    The lake on which the "Akosombo Queen" will be used is the largest man-made lake in the world.

    SYNOPSIS: The first passenger vessel to sail on the world's largest man-made lake has had its maiden voyage on Lake Volta in Ghana.

    She's the "Akosombo Queen" - a gift to Ghana from the Dutch Government.

    The Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority is Mr. Quartey. He told guests that the new vessel was playing an important role in developing Lake Volta as a transport resource. He hoped shipping could develop in co-ordination with other forms of transport in Ghana.

    Guest of honour was the Dutch Ambassador, Mr. Arriens. He mentioned the interest shown by Dutch nationals in the development of Ghana - and the work of the Volta River Authority particularly.

    Cutting the tape to inaugurate the new lake service - Major General Amenu, Ghana's Commissioner of Works and Housing.

    He and other guests then boarded the vessel for a short inspection and cruise.

    The "Akosombo Queen" will ply from Akosombo the Yapei - a distance of two hundred and fifty miles. Each trip will take twenty hours.

    The vessel weighs fifty-five tons, with a cruising speed of twelve-and-a-half knots.

    Sleeping accommodation is provided on board for thirty two second class, and twelve first class passengers. During the first months of operation "Akosombo Queen" will sail under both the Dutch and Ghanaian flags.
