    TWO WESTERNERS AND A SOUTH KOREAN WERE MADE BUDDHIST MONKS AT A CEREMONY IN BANGKOK'S WAT MAHATHART TEMPLE ON SATURDAY. ONE OF THE WESTERNERS WAS A CANADIAN, THE OTHER A WEST GERMAN.

    THE COLOURFUL CEREMONY BEGAN WITH THE THREE MEN LEADING A PROCESSION AROUND THE TEMPLE. THEN THEY WERE ORDAINED AND GIVEN THEIR YELLOW ROBES AFTER PRAYING BEFORE A HUGE IMAGE OF BUDDHA.

    THE CANADIAN AND THE GERMAN, WERE AMONG A DOZEN WESTERNERS, STUDYING IN THE THAI CAPITAL TO BECOME MONKS. SINCE THEIR ARRIVAL IN BANGKOK A FEW MONTHS AGO, THEY HAVE BEEN LIVING IN TEMPLES, STUDYING THE TWO THOUSAND LAWS OF THEIR RELIGION.
