  • Description

THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS THROUGHOUT BRITAIN SPENT TODAY (WEDNESDAY) PROTESTING AT THE DECISION OF THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT TO SUBSTANTIALLY INCREASE THE FEES FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS.

AT MANY COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES, LECTURES WERE BOYCOTTED AND MASS MEETINGS, SILENT VIGILS, 'TEACH-INS' AND PROTEST MARCHES ARRANGED IN THEIR PLACE.

THE FEES FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS ARE TO RISE FROM GBP70 STERLING A YEAR TO GBP250 STERLING TO OFFSET THE HEAVY FINANCIAL COSTS BEING BORNE BY THE GOVERNMENT. THE INCREASE WILL AFFECT THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS FROM COMMONWEALTH COUNTRIES STUDYING AT BRITISH UNIVERSITY AND TECHNOLOGICAL INSTITUTIONS.

IN LONDON, MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND STUDENTS PARADED WITH BANNERS IN A SERIES OF MARCHES DURING WHICH THEY CALLED FOR THE RESIGNATION OF THE MINISTER FOR EDUCATION, MR. CROSLAND.

AT DOWNING STREET POLICE ALLOWED A DELEGATION TO DELIVER A PETITION CONTAINING MORE THAN 40-THOUSAND SIGNATURES AT THE PRIME MINISTER'S RESIDENCE. HOWEVER,WHEN THE MAIN BODY OF DEMONSTRATORS TRIED TO MARCH FROM WHITEHALL INTO THE DOWNING STREET THEY WERE HELD BACK BY POLICE. MANY OF THE STUDENTS LOBBIED THE MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT ABOUT THE INCREASE IN FEES.

SIMILAR DEMONSTRATIONS WERE HELD IN EDINBURGH AND IN BIRMINGHAM.
