Background: A member of the military junta which ruled Greece between 1967 and 1974, former Brigadier-General Stylianos Pattakos, told the Athens High Court on January 31 he had been wrongfully imprisoned. Pattakos, serving a life sentence, made a personal appearance in court. He told the five judges at the hearing he had been convicted under an unlawful retroactive decree in 1975. Pattakos added he was not asking for a retrial, as he did not deny his actions. But he claimed the 1967 coup in which he took part was not a crime. A ruling on his case will be made in the next few weeks. The junta was led by George Papadopoulos, with Pattakos and ex-Colonel Nicholas Makarezos as his closest associates. Death sentences for all three men were later commuted.
