  • Description

In swirling fog, July 19, two destroyers of the United States Navy - the "Ammen" and the "Collett" - were in a head-on collision off Newport Beach, California. 11 sailors were killed and six badly injured as the "Collett's" bow ploughed into the port side of the "Ammen", tearing a great hole in her side.

A flood of water crashed into the "Ammen's" engine room, causing an outbreak of fire. This was brought under control after a long effort. The "Collett" - which had taken evasive action by reversing engines and throwing its rudder over - suffered a completely smashed bow from the impact.

"Ammen" - with an ominous list - anchored in fairly shallow waters. The "Collett" travelled under her own steam to Long Beach naval base a few miles away. Both vessels were radar-equipped but neither Captain would give details of the crash before an official inquiry.
