Background: The long-overdue Nina was sighted last weekend (Friday, 30 November) off Puerto Rico. A Navy plane spotted the 40-foot reproduction of Christopher Columbus's caravelle 800 miles East of Puerto Rico...1,400 miles from her original destination of San Salvador, in the Bahamas. The Nina the Second was built as a private venture duplicating the original 1492 voyage, and was more than two weeks overdue on a voyage from the Canary Islands. She has been the object of an intense search by U.S. Coast Guard and Navy Craft. Nina's 9-man crew was without radio communication...by its own plan...until a Navy plane dropped a two-way radio aboard the small vessel. Then the crew reported that all was well.
