VISNEWS filmed the Israeli sector of Jerusalem June 29 as Premier Ben-Gurion indignantly walked out of a special Cabinet meeting called after his coalition partners refused to vote in support of a GBP6-million arms deal with West Germany.

The deal to sell West Germany 250,000 Haifa-made grenade throwers was brought before the Cabinet last December when, according to Mr Ben-Gurion, it was nor opposed by the two Ahdut Avoda (Labour coalition party) Ministers. Since then the deal has split the nation and the Premier's three-party coalition of his own Mapai party, the left-wing Ahdut Avoda and the Mapam party.

National religious organisations and the opposition Herut party joined an outcry that the arms sale offends Jewish conscience and is not worth the money West Germany would pay. The Premier insisted that the deal was essential to the country's economy, and threatened June 28 to resign from office if his coalition partners failed to support him.

Ben-Gurion left the Cabinet meeting June 29 saying he would not sit at the same table with the Ahdut Avoda Ministers until the party paper "Lamerhav" published an apology for their report that he had distorted the facts concerning the transaction. The Cabinet then decided to uphold its previous decision on the arms sale, turning down proposals is stop the deal.

The Knesset rejected a Communist motion of non-confidence in Ben-Gurion's Government June 30 and approved of the arms sale July 1 in spite of the opposition of the Ahdut Avoda and Mapam coalition parties. The Premier has now decided to delay his resignation for a few days.
