Background: EARTHQUAKES IN THE AZORES HAVE FORCED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE TO FLEE THEIR HOMES. AN UNDERWATER VOLCANO HAS BEEN BLAMED FOR THE SERIES OF TREMORS.

DESTRUCTION HAS BEEN GREATEST IN THE ISLAND OF SAO JORGE, AND 20,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EVACUATED TO THE NEIGHBOURING ISLAND OF TERCEIRA, WHERE THE EARTHQUAKES HAVE BEEN LESS INTENSE.

THEY WERE TAKEN OFF IN PORTUGUESE AND UNITED STATES ARMY LANDING CRAFT AND TWO BRITISH SHIPS -- THE CABLE-LAYER MIRROR AND THE FREIGHTER REMUERA. ROUGH SEAS HAMPERED THE EVACUATION.

THE PORTUGUESE ATLANTIC ISLANDS WERE SHAKEN FOR FIVE DAYS BY CONTINUING EARTHQUAKES. THE PONTA DOS ROSAIS LIGHTHOUSE IN SAO JORGE WAS ABANDONED BY ITS STAFF WHEN IT BROKE DOWN AND SEEMED IN IMMINENT DANGER OF COLLAPSE.

A POST OFFICE AND HOSPITAL WERE SAID TO HAVE COLLAPSED AND UNCONFIRMED REPORTS SAID THE ISLAND'S TINY CAPITAL OF VELAS HAD MANY BUILDINGS RAZED TO THE GROUND.

MANY ROADS WERE CUT. ROADS DEPARTMENT CHIEF IN SAO JORGE, ANTONIO LOURIRO, SAID: "WHAT HAPPENED TO US I WOULDN'T WISH ON MY WORST ENEMY. WE ALL THOUGHT THE END MIGHT COME AT ANY MOMENT."
THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPORTS OF ANY CASUALTIES. EVACUEES CAME ASHORE AT TERCEIRA AMID SCENES OF PATHOS. MANY WERE WORRYING OVER THE FATE OF THEIR MEANS OF LIVELIHOOD.

ONLY A STRONG SMELL OF SULPHUR IN THE AIR BETRAYS THE PRESENCE OF THE SUBMARINE VOLCANO. NO FISSURES HAVE OPENED IN THE LAND.
