Background: This is the area of the peaceful village of Rivadelago, Spain, and the waters of Lake Sanabria, which swamped over a dam 01.30 hrs Jan 9 and is reported to have killed 150. The dam's watchman was swept away before he could give the alarm and the 50 ft wave of the torrent plunged 1200 ft down a narrow valley on to the unsuspecting village. A further 200 are reported missing. Only the 15 cent church, battered, remains standing.
80 houses were sliced to the ground, both of the villages two buses were wrecked. Dead animals - cows hens goats dogs - were strewn everywhere, as the dazed villagers from other areas rushed in to help.
