    PRESIDENT JULIUS NYERERE OF TANZANIA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) INSPECTED A GUARD OF HONOUR AT THE DAR ES SALAAM NATIONAL STADIUM, THE CENTRAL EVENT IN AN OTHERWISE QUIET INDEPENDENCE AND REPUBLIC DAY.

    MISSING WERE THE TRADITIONAL DANCES AND OTHER CELEBRATIONS, IN DEFERENCE TO THE COUNTRY'S SIX-MILLION MOSLEMS, OBSERVING THE HOLY MONTH OF RAMADAN.

    IT WAS THE FIRST TIME IN SEVEN YEARS THAT THE CELEBRATIONS WERE CURTAILED, ALTHOUGH SOME SEVEN-THOUSAND PEOPLE JOINED THE PRESIDENT IN REVIEWING A MILITARY PARADE BY MEMBERS OF THE ARMED SERVICES.

    THE ANNIVERSARY IS USUALLY MARKED BY PARADES, RALLIES AND SPEECHES FROM NATIONAL LEADERS - AS WELL AS BEING PUBLIC HOLIDAY.

    DECEMBER NINTH WAS THE EIGHT ANNIVERSARY SINCE TANZANIA ACHIEVED INDEPENDENCE AND THE SEVENTH OF ITS REPUBLICAN STATUS.

    WIDESPREAD CELEBRATING COULD STILL BE HELD HOWEVER ON JANUARY 12TH, WHICH ALSO REVOLUTION DAY IN ZANZIBAR, THE MAINLAND'S ISLAND PARTNER IN THE UNITED REPUBLIC.
