  • Description

With the deadline on the current Middle East ceasefire rapidly expiring, Syrian Prime Minister Hafez al-Assad flew to Algeria yesterday (Saturday) to discuss the continuing crisis with President Boumedienne.

General Assad, who is also Syrian Defence Minister, has been working to improve relations amongst Arab nations since taking up office last year.

During his talks in Algiers, he was expected to brief President Boumedienne and other Algerian leaders on Syria's proposals to join the planned Arab Federation, together with Egypt, Libya and Sudan, and on his country's efforts to strengthen the eastern front against Israel before the present ceasefire expires on February 5.

General Assad flew to Algeria from Cairo, where he had just completed three days of talks with Egyptian, Libyan and Sudanese leaders. A communique issued at the end of the talks called for the complete mobilisation of Arab powers and resources to eject Israel from territories occupied in the 1967 war. The communique rejected any attempt to make the Middle East peace permanent.
