Background: Traffic between Amman and Jerash in Northern Jordan was disrupted on Friday and Saturday (11 and 12 December) after explosions at a Bridge on the main road. Telephone communication were also sabotaged. The Jordan Government said Palestinian Commandos were responsible for the attacks.
After the incident the Government accused the Commandos of threatening the country and its people by sabotage operations.
In addition to attacking the bride and cutting the telephone line, the Commandos were alleged to have planted mines in the area to cause causalities and damage vehicles.
The official spokesman said the Government took a serious view of the attack which was "a new kind of threat to the interest of the country."
In a separate incident on Friday a Jordanian security post guarding a power generator in Amman came under rocket and grenade attack. The Interior Minister said Commandos tried to storm the post were repulsed. The Arab Observers Mission, which helps to supervise the Cairo Agreement between Jordan and the Commandos, investigated the incident and found parts of rocket, unexploded hand grenades and empty Soviet-made cartridges.
