  • Description

ROWING BOATS IN THE SHAPE OF DRAGONS AND POWERED BY 50 CARSMEN, RACED ACROSS HONGKONG HARBOUR ON THURSDAY (19 JUNE). IT WAS THE ANNUAL DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL.

DOZENS OF GAILY-DECORATED FISHING JUNKS, SMALLER VESSELS AND SPECIAL TRAINS BROUGHT HOLIDAYMAKERS FROM OUTLYING AREAS TO HONGKONG HARBOUR FOR THE OCCASION. A TOTAL OF 63 ROWING TEAMS PARTICIPATED.

THE FESTIVAL MARKS THE SUICIDE OF A CHINESE PATRIOT-POET, CHU YUEN, WHO DROWNED HIMSELF IN THE KWAT LO RIVER IN CHINA'S HUNAN PROVINCE IN 278 B.C. HE WAS THE VICTIM OF A COURT INTRIGUE.

IN THE COLOURFUL, TRADITIONAL RACES, FOR WHICH PRIZES ARE AWARDED, EACH BOAT HAS A WOODEN DRAGON HEAD ATTACHED TO THE BOW AND IS ROWED BY A BODY OF CARSMEN TO THE ACCOMPANIMENT OF BEATING CHINESE DRUMS.
