Background: Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia held talks with President Anwar Sadat during a one-day visit to the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Friday (May 11).
Also present at Friday's talks were Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohammed Hassan El Zayyat and his Ethiopian counterpart, Dr. Minassie Haile.
The 81-year-old monarch and the Egyptian leader discussed the Middle East Situation, African issues and bilateral relations. The Emperor was expected to convey President Sadat's views to officials when he visited London on Saturday (12 May) and Washington on Monday (14 May).
Relations between the two countries had been lukewarm, following Egyptian press reports that Ethiopia had given israel military facilities in the Red Sea. The Ethiopian Foreign Minister was sent to Cairo last month to strengthen Ethiopian denials.
During his brief visit t Cairo - his first for 18 months - Haile Selassie laid a wreath at the tomb of ex-President Nasser.
