Background: Desolation .. at HongKong's fishing centre of Cheung Chau Island after the June 8-10 typhoon 'Mary' in which 37 died, 76 received injuries and 18,000 lost their accommodation in the British Colony. Some 50 fishing craft at Cheung Chau sank putting out of work hundreds of fishermen. In all, HongKong lost 150 boats.

Cheung Chau's fishing industry normally supplies HongKong's needs - it is the 'rice-bowl' of the Colony. The typhoon killed 17 engaged in the industry. Police reported June 13 that 26 others were feared dead. Casualties numbered nearly one hundred.

The typhoon wrecked the foreshore, smashed the waterfront into a mass of broken wood. Pounding waves threw the fish boats against one another. In a bid to save them in the 30 feet high waves, some fishers lost their lives as the boats broken up against the waterfront.

Homeless and injured received food and clothing at a local school transformed into a welfare centre. Governor Sir Robert Black promised speedy relief and rehabilitation for the victims.
