  • Description

Competitors from nine countries have gathered in the capital of South Korea, Seoul, for the Third Asian Judo Championships, which opened on Saturday (2 november).

The three-day tournament held at Seoul's Changchung gymnasium, was hosted by the Korean Judo Association.

Japan, traditionally a very strong competitor, was expected to lead in the Championships, and indeed late reports said the Japanese made a clean sweep of all six events ... the middleweight, lightweight, open weight, light middleweight, light heavy weight and heavyweight titles.

The star of the Japanese team is Shozo Fujii, 24, an athletic instructor of the Kyoto Sangyo University. Fujii won the middleweight titles in the Seventh World Championships in West Germany and the Eighth in Switzerland.

And, at the latest Championships in Seoul, Fujii took the titles for middleweight and open weight but not without some stiff competition from his opponents.

SYNOPSIS: The Japanese team was led by strong contenders ... like Shozo Fujii and Yoshimaru Minami ... both have won many titles in other world championships. His compatriot, Yoshimaru Minami, was the lightweight title-holder of the Eighth World Championships in Switzerland and the French International Tournament this year.

About forty Judo players took part in the Championships, hosted by the Korea Judo Association. The first Asian Judo Championship was held in Manila, the Philippines, in 1966. The next Championships will be held in Jakarta in 1978.
